The UK has a bit of a reputation for being full of potatoes, cabbage, parsnips and other wintery vegetables. For good reason some may say! Our weather can be grey and rainy even in the height of June (referring to the horrendous weather the last week of course) and this means that some of our favourite fruits and veggies have quite short growing seasons or cannot be grown in the UK easily at all. Shopping, cooking and selling in season produce is one of the best ways to support the environment and enjoy delicious food.
Summer brings lots of delicious, light fruits and vegetables in to season and we really should try and make the best of them while they are here. I am sure we all have seen the sad looking strawberries being sold in December that taste like almost nothing! In season fruits and veggies are much more flavourful and are significantly cheaper as they don’t have to be imported. They also tend to be higher in nutrients!
So, what are some of the top picks for summer fruits and veggies in the UK? Here is our list:
Fruits & Vegetables in Season in the UK in June
Courgettes & cucumbers
Why not try a fresh courgette and bean risotto? Or a summer fruits tart? Check out the full list from the Vegetarian Society here.
Of course, shopping from local farmer’s markets is a great way to support your local economy, but just by choosing in season fruits and veggies in the supermarket, you will be making a positive difference. This goes for food brands and restaurants too, changing menus and ingredients seasonally is economical, good for the environment and adds interest to the consumer!
